06 Hoofden/Heads Haiku

Introduction

# 06 Hoofden/Heads Haiku is the sixth of the Haiku writings by Henk Luijten. These Haikus have originally been written by Henk in his native language Dutch. Shortly after we got acquainted Camille made the illustrations for the writings. Not familiar with Dutch as a language yet. Consequently, it was a project through which Camille made herself more familiar with some of the aspects of the Dutch language. To catch the gist of the poems and translate the words into an image. Further, she also translated the Dutch poems into English.

What the poem is about

The “06 Hoofden/Heads” Haiku by Henk Luijten is about our full heads. Our heads that we constantly think, worry and plan. Henk asks you, the reader, if that is the reason for your fear? The fear that makes us all become into runaway horses. The fear which emerges in you too, when you just take in too much. Let’s say information, impressions, and anything else which makes our heads fill up like they do.
Camille chose to translate this haiku twice. Both versions are almost literally translated. Nevertheless, the ‘runaway’aspect of the horses in the Dutch meaning ‘op hol slaan’ gets lost a little. The ‘running wild,’ or the ‘race’ as a substitute. Where the ‘runaway’ would have more distracted from the meaning of the Dutch poem. Also the Dutch pronoun ‘daarom’ determines the poem, almost dominates it. The meaning of this word in English; therefre, that’s why, hence, wherefore, doesn’t truly reflect the importance of role the Dutch word plays inside the poem.er in English. Which in turn isn’t much appreciated in English poetry. Apart from the pun factor, of course.

As a means to help each and one another to understand each other better, beyond the borders of our native languages.
